Employee Diaries: To get a better team, invest in yourself

· Employee Diaries,Motivated Team,Motivate your team,Self Investment,Self Awareness

What These Are:

Ever wished you could get inside the mind of your employees to see what you’re doing well, what they’re learning, and how to motivate them better? The Employee Diaries gives you that opportunity by taking a dive into the mind of Grow Disrupt employees and offering you knowledge and implementation ideas for improving your team management.

This Week: Susannah Scheller, "Want a better team? Invest in yourself!”

Stephanie is a busy woman! And usually she’s pretty amazing about keeping herself present in the current moment. But lately I’d noticed she was getting a little distracted in our weekly one on ones.

The thing that encouraged me was that she noticed it, called herself out on it, and made a plan to correct it.

I can’t imagine that was easy!

If you’re reading this, you know what I mean. Admitting a mistake to your employees is difficult: you never know how they’re going to take it or if they’re going to have a good response. But being self-aware enough to know when you’ve performed below average is essential to being able to manage your team properly.

If Stephanie hadn’t mentioned what was going on, I might not have said anything. It would have been a mistake on my end, but I most likely would have stuck to my non-confrontational nature and kept quiet about it until it got to a breaking point.

Stephanie’s actions created an immense well of trust for her in me.

It motivated me further to see the company succeed, because I knew she was self-aware enough to not let herself get in the way of growth: regardless of what that looked like.

So if you’re wanting a more motivated and more powerful team, take some time to invest in self-awareness. As a leader, it’s an incredible asset and you might just find yourself pulling a Stephanie someday.
